The Story
The town of Gibsons just got greener.
The Situation
The picturesque Town of Gibsons has long been known as 'the gateway to the Sunshine Coast'. It's also a municipality that strives to be environmentally conscious. So when the Town decided to make upgrades to the aging swimming pool, school board offices and municipal hall, they turned to BC Hydro for cost-effective Power Smart solutions.
The Solution
An energy engineering team successfully carried out energy-saving measures projected to save Gibsons over $4,800 annually:
- Energy-efficient lighting was installed to reduce the facilities' energy consumption and cut down on maintenance work.
- Thermostats for electrical baseboard heaters were replaced with programmable models that adjust the heating at pre-set times, saving energy and creating a more comfortable environment.
- Timers were installed to turn off outdoor air fans during unoccupied periods. Not only did this save energy, but it also improved air ventilation quality.
"Gibsons strives to be green. We're constantly looking for ways to meet the town's energy needs while reducing costs and being environmentally friendly," says Mayor Barry Janyk. The Town is also considering upgrading the curling rink and firehall to enjoy further energy savings.
