City of Coquitlam

The Story

I sleep better with my new night lights.

The Situation

Coquitlam has long been known for its many parks, but the City strives to be "green" in more ways than one. Several years ago, an energy committee was created (with members from Engineering, Parks and Recreation, the Fire Department and BC Hydro) to look at various ways of meeting energy needs with cost-reducing, environmentally friendly Power Smart solutions.

The Solution

Working closely with BC Hydro, the City of Coquitlam adopted a range of highly successful energy-saving measures in city buildings, grounds and public works facilities:

  • Streetlights were converted to more efficient high-pressure sodium ones, reducing wattage requirements by nearly half and saving over $500,000.
  • Both the Town Centre Aquatic Complex and the City Hall were designed with the involvement of BC Hydro's Power Smart standards. The Aquatic Complex now saves more than 109,500 kWh of energy each year, and the City Hall is 9% above industry standards for energy efficiency.

As part of a Power Smart building analysis, a Hydro engineer diagnosed that the Ice Arena could reduce annual energy costs by $23,000 by upgrading the refrigeration and lighting.
