The Story
Annual energy savings of $74,000: Mission accomplished.
The Situation
The District of Mission's Leisure Centre has always been an important focal point for the community. However, after more than 30 years of use, the ice arena, curling rink, and swimming pool were in need of major upgrades. Refrigeration and heating systems were near the end of their life, so maintenance and energy costs were high. The lighting was old technology with low light levels, and there was a lot of wasteful usage of municipal water for cooling.
The Solution
Instead of spending over three million dollars to build a new Leisure Centre, the District of Mission turned to BC Hydro for a cost-effective Power Smart solution. The energy engineering team:
- replaced the refrigeration plant and hot water boiler systems;
- updated the lighting systems to energy-efficient T8 fluorescent and metal halide systems;
- installed low-E ceilings; and installed new DDC controls for the HVAC system.
As a result, the District will enjoy annual energy savings of $74,000. Additional savings include 8.5 million gallons of water, and reduced demand on the local sewer system. In 1999 the District received BC Hydro's Power Smart Excellence Award in recognition of its long-term commitment to energy efficiency and innovation.
