Electrical Distribution System Optimization

Reduce electricity costs with no capital investment

Electrical Distribution System Optimization (EDSO) helps eligible Power Smart Partners reduce electricity costs with no capital investment through matching voltage to equipment requirements. Voltage optimization can be achieved by performing a tap change on your transformer(s). Additional energy savings can be realized by balancing phase loads.

An EDSO study identifies cost-effective ways to achieve optimal performance and efficiency of your electrical distribution system.

The Offer

BC Hydro will fund 50% of your EDSO study, and suggest a registered Power Smart Alliance member to assess your electrical distribution system and conduct the study.

Once we review and approve the study, and if you implement the recommendations, you may be eligible to receive bonus funding of up to 50% of the remaining cost of your EDSO study.

Who Qualifies

You are eligible for the EDSO study if you are a commercial, government, institutional, or industrial distribution Power Smart Partner who:

  • On rate 1210 or 1211 customer;
  • Use more than 2 GWh per year;
  • Have one or more adjustable transformers;
  • Have point-of-use voltage that is higher than necessary; and
  • Have not previously performed voltage optimization.

How You Benefit

By optimizing your electrical distribution system, you can:

  • Save electricity costs without capital investment;
  • Reduce lumen depreciation in lighting;
  • Extend the lifetime of most electrical equipment; and
  • Increase electrical system reliability, which reduces downtime and unplanned maintenance.

How It Works

If you are interested in participating in the Power Smart Partner EDSO program, your BC Hydro Key Account Manager will suggest a registered Power Smart Alliance member to pre-qualify your site. If the initial review shows that your facility has voltage optimization potential, the consultant will contact you to start the detailed EDSO study.

Note: Funding is available to cover a portion of the study costs. The cost of implementing the recommendations in the study is the responsibility of the Power Smart Partner.
