GRI Index
The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is a multi-stakeholder process and independent institution whose mission is to develop and disseminate globally applicable Sustainability Reporting Guidelines. These guidelines are for voluntary use by organizations for reporting on the economic, environmental, and social dimensions of their activities, products and services. They present reporting principles and specific content indicators to guide the preparation of organization-level sustainability reports. Over 1000 organizations worldwide now use them to prepare their Annual or Sustainability Reports.
The GRI incorporates the active participation of representatives from business, accountancy, investment, environmental, human rights, research and labour organizations from around the world. Started in 1997, GRI became independent in 2002 and is an official collaborating centre of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and has incorporated the UN Global Compact Principles into its Guidelines.
Reporting in alignment with the GRI principles and performance measures has historically contributed to BC Hydro being recognized as a leading sustainability reporter (e.g., by Stratos and the UNEP/Sustainability's Global Reporters). Since 2004/05 Annual Report, BC Hydro increased its level of compliance with the Guidelines from "In Alignment With" to "In Accordance With" the Guidelines. This increased level of reporting performance has been independently verified by the GRI in Amsterdam. This is the first year that BC Hydro has sought and been granted this verification.
