About BC Hydro's competitive sourcing process

BC Hydro employs a competitive sourcing process, advertised publicly, as its normal procurement method. This is used for acquisitions above its public competition thresholds.

Public advertisements are done on BC Bid and may include other advertising methods.

Request for Tender (RFT)

Tendering is a frequent procurement practice for major equipment and construction. Tenders include a well defined set of specifications.

Request for Proposals (RFP)

RFP's are used when BC Hydro is seeking creative solutions from proponents. The basis for an award in an RFP process is normally the highest score with the best overall value to BC Hydro.

Request for Information (RFI)

The purpose of an RFI is to gather general supplier or product information. This mechanism may be used when BC Hydro is searching for a solution or material but has not yet determined what characteristics the ideal solution would have and needs more information to understand what is available and what supplier capabilities are.

BC Hydro posts the names of suppliers that responded to competitive bids on the BC Bid website.

Disclosure of information relating to request for proposal (RFP) and request for tender (RFT) may be found on the BC Bid website.

Public opening of bid documents

As of November 3, 2009, BC Hydro discontinued the 2:00 p.m. public bid openings at BC Hydro's office at 333 Dunsmuir St. in Vancouver.

In its place, the names of all suppliers that have responded to tenders and RFPs are posted to the BC Bid website.
