Clean, abundant electricity is a key to British Columbia's economic prosperity and our quality of life.
BC Hydro acts with integrity in all of our business relationships, complying with all applicable laws, following best practice guidelines in corporate governance, and providing a healthy and safe workplace for all of our employees.
A province built on hydroelectric powerAs an organization, we take an open and transparent approach to communications. Our website provides British Columbians access to information such as our Annual and Quarterly reports, Service Plan and Financial Information Act Return. Project-specific information, such as the Integrated Electricity Plans and Revenue Requirement Application decisions, is also posted. The Board reviews the annual Corporate Communications Plan, which captures the strategy and actions proposed for the upcoming year. In addition, we require individuals and companies who conduct business with us to use similar high standards of conduct. In the two decades that followed the creation of BC Hydro in 1961, B.C. undertook some of the most ambitious hydroelectric construction projects in the world. These large-scale dams, notably on the Peace and Columbia rivers, provide an electricity supply to British Columbians that is 90% clean. B.C.'s existing hydroelectric projects, however, will not be enough to meet anticipated demand. Today, we already consume more electricity than we generate and we buy more electricity than we sell. We have had to lean increasingly on imported electricity – not all of it clean – to meet our demands. Strategy & plansWe have a responsibility to take care of the environment, meet community needs and deliver excellent financial results. HistoryFrom the founding of the Victoria Gas Company in 1860 to the development of the Peace and Columbia River projects in the '60s and '70s, to restructuring during the 1980s. Corporate responsibilityWe are committed to being a good neighbour in the communities in which we work and to treating our neighbours with respect and consideration.Executive teamCharles Reid is the acting president and chief executive officer of BC Hydro. The executive team is led by the CEO and includes leaders from the lines of business and corporate service groups. BoardsBC Hydro's Board of Directors (Board) is appointed by the Lieutenant-Governor in Council and is responsible for the overall direction of the company. CommitteesDirectors are stewards of the corporation. They form committees that deal with specific matters. Committees generally meet quarterly in conjunction with board meetings. SubsidiariesIn addition to powering the province, BC Hydro is involved in other activities that are more diversified and international in nature. Our subsidiaries, Powerex and Powertech Labs, reflect this diversity. |
