B.C. meets six per cent energy reduction goal for Game 7

Team Power Smart member Ryan Kesler and Vancouver Canucks congratulated on an electrifying season

Vancouver, B.C. – BC Hydro is congratulating its customers for rising to the challenge of reducing energy use during Game 7 by six per cent, the highest reduction yet during this year’s playoffs.

Over the entire duration of the game, electricity reduction was 370 megawatts less on an average expected load of approximately 6,100 megawatts – the equivalent to turning off 24 million compact florescent light bulbs (CFLs). The six percent reduction was a major step up from the four per cent reduction in provincial electricity use for the duration of Game 6.

Over the entire 25 playoff games the Vancouver Canucks played in during this year’s playoffs, customers managed to reduce the total provincial electricity use by a minimum of 8,862 megawatt hours (MWh) – the equivalent to turning off over 236 million CFLs.

The highest reduction in the playoffs prior to Game 7 (5.6 per cent) was during Game 3 of the Canucks/Bruins series. Playoff history showed that overall electricity demand in B.C. dropped while the games were being televised, showing that  even small behavioral changes – whether intentional or accidental -- can add up to make a difference.

BC Hydro also congratulates Team Power Smart member Ryan Kesler and the entire Canucks organization on a truly remarkable 40th season. Their passion and determination electrified and inspired everyone across B.C.
