Canucks playoff run generates energy savings winning streak!

The 2-1 win over the Nashville Predators Monday night in the music city has Canucks fans singing praises for their team which is now one step closer to reaching their cup dreams. The claw-biting game not only produced the win that fans had hoped for, it was also a win in conservation. As with previous playoff games, Games 5 and 6, which both took place at 5 pm, continued the province’s energy conservation winning streak, with each game resulting in an average 2 per cent decline in energy consumption during game time. This is the equivalent of turning off approximately 13 million compact fluorescent light bulbs. It seems the electricity the two teams brought to the ice was enough to keep other electrical devices turned off as fans stayed glued to their televisions to watch the games unfold.

The energy consumption decline during playoff games is comparable to the energy savings seen during this year’s Earth Hour, which saw an approximate 1.04 per cent drop in the province’s energy load.

During game 7 of the Vancouver and Chicago series, which took place at 7 pm on Tuesday, April 26th, BC Hydro estimated an average drop in electricity load of about 3.6 per cent (244 Mega watts) compared to the same day, same time the previous week. This is equal to turning off 48 million compact fluorescent light bulbs.
