Woodfibre LNG Interconnection Project

View of Stawamus Chief and Howe-Sound

We've been asked by Woodfibre LNG Limited Partnership (Woodfibre LNG) to supply power to their liquefied natural gas (LNG) processing and export facility near Squamish.

Read about our plans below and learn more about the project at Woodfibre LNG's website.

What's new

In January 2024 we re-started the work to interconnect the Woodfibre LNG facility to our system. We're working to identify a location near Watts Point (see figure below) for new microwave equipment required for the Woodfibre LNG facility to be able to communicate with our Cheekye Substation.

Woodfibre LNG is working to design and build two new transmission lines from their facility to Cheekye Substation where they will interconnect with the BC Hydro system.

We're working to interconnect the Woodfibre LNG facility to our system through:

  • Work at Cheekye Substation to add equipment to connect new 138kV transmission lines being designed and constructed by Woodfibre LNG from their facility to the substation;
  • A microwave communication link that connects Cheekye Substation to the Woodfibre LNG facility via a new antenna structure proposed for a site near Watts Point;
  • Upgrades at select structures along an existing overhead transmission line between Function Junction Substation near Whistler and Bridge River Terminal Substation near Seton Lake.

Over the coming months, we'll complete studies to:

  • Identify a location for the communications equipment near Watts Point required for the Woodfibre LNG facility to be able to communicate with Cheekye substation and
  • Determine the transmission line structures on the existing transmission line between Function Junction Substation and Bridge River Terminal Substation that need to be upgraded, as well as the types of upgrades we'll need to make.

In parallel, we are investigating whether we can interconnect the Woodfibre LNG facility earlier.

The project area is shown in the following figure.

Supplying power to the Woodfibre LNG facility will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by facilitating the use of clean electricity rather than fossil fuel to power equipment and operations.

We'll undertake a variety of studies including:

  • Environmental (fisheries, vegetation, wildlife, terrain, etc.)
  • Archaeological (as required)
  • Geotechnical (as required)

We're working to identify any permits or authorizations that may be required for the project.

Like all industrial customers, Woodfibre LNG will follow our interconnection process. Customers provide financial contributions according to the B.C. Electric Tariff to pay for their connection to the BC Hydro grid.

We anticipate that construction will start in 2025. We're working to confirm an in-service date for the project.

We'll continue to work with First Nations and local communities and update you as we plan, design, and construct the project.

Feel free to contact us at any time if you have questions or would like to discuss the project.
