How do I save electricity when I'm on vacation?
Save while you’re away
The next time you plan a vacation getaway, take a few minutes to turn off and unplug as many non-essential devices as possible. It will cut your electricity use, avoid safety hazards and save you money.
Here's a list of the things you should turn off before taking off.
Even during a vacation, usage can spike
There are many reasons why your bill could be higher than you expect, and that includes higher than expected bills while you’re away on vacation, especially in winter. If your home is heated with baseboard or other electric heating, there’s a chance that your electricity use could spike during cold weather while you’re away. Even if you set your thermostats to 15 C, a big dip in outside temperature can still cause a spike in heating costs just to maintain that temperature.
Try tracking and comparing your electricity consumption online, selecting the “compare to outside temperature” option in the MyHydro consumption graphs. Start by logging in to MyHydro and selecting, View detailed consumption. You can see your consumption (as of the previous day) by month, week, day or even hour, and compare electricity use against outside temperatures and similar homes in the neighbourhood.
If you’re a residential customer who’s still concerned about a higher than expected winter bill, give our customer team a call at 1 800 BCHYDRO (1 800 224 9376).
