CASA wifi-connected thermostat trial
Join the trial
In recent years you may have heard about light bulbs, appliances and other products that connect to our smart phones and allow us the ability to control them remotely. The evolution of the smart home means that our devices are more connected than ever before, making it easier and more convenient to do things like turning off the lights, changing the thermostat and remotely locking our doors.
We're looking for customers to join the CASA thermostat trial, where you'll have up to 5 wifi-connected thermostats installed in your home. These thermostats control electric baseboard heaters, helping to manage energy use through various features and help control the consumption of your entire home through one centralized dashboard. They are wifi-connected, and can be controlled through your smart phone from anywhere.
How the trial works
This trial will help us learn more about the benefits of smart home technology and will help you manage your electricity use better. By controlling your heat remotely, you can ensure you are heating your home more efficiently, saving you power and money on your bill. As part of the trial we would like to encourage users to participate in the use of smart home services such as IFTTT, as well as participate in voluntary peak time energy saving events. Just like when cars are bumper-to-bumper on the highway during your rush hour commute to work, our electricity system experiences peak times as well. These peak times often occur on cold winter nights when everyone turns on their heat, or on hot summer days when air conditioning peaks. With your help, we're hoping to reduce electricity usage during these peak periods. The smart technology of the Casa thermostat can be used to make only the slightest adjustment to its settings to avoid using energy during peak times while still keeping you comfortable.
You always have full control over your thermostats, taking part in peak time events is voluntary.
The trial will run from November 1, 2017 to October 31, 2019. During the trial, you'll be asked to complete up to 3 short surveys about your experience.
Who can qualify
Customers must meet the following criteria:
- You're the named BC Hydro account holder.
- Your home is at least 80% electrically heated by thermostat controlled electric baseboards.
- Your home doesn't have a tenant space served by the same BC Hydro meter.
- You have wifi internet service (2.4GHz).
Please read the terms and conditions [PDF, 36 KB] for full details. Applications will be accepted until November 30th, or until the point we're fully subscribed for the trial. Applicants will be notified by the end of December if they're a chosen participant.
About the CASA wifi-connected thermostat
Features include simple; home, away, night-time and vacation settings to allow you to change all your thermostats at once throughout your home with one click. You can receive alerts of unusually low (did you accidentally leave a window open?) or high (did you need the heating on right now?) room temperatures. You can also remotely control your thermostat to adapt to your needs. For example, set it to turn on shortly before returning home from a workday, rather than leaving it on for several hours.
