What is Peak Saver?
By signing up for Peak Saver, you’ll be invited to Peak Saver events, during which we’ll ask you to reduce your energy consumption on a specified time and date. These events will be up to fours hours, and we’ll call around 15 during the trial period, starting December 1, 2020. Why should my business participate?
Receive $100 for just signing up and additional rebates on your bill when you’re able to participate in our Peak Saver events. Participation in each event is completely voluntary and you decide what areas you can reduce within your facility and by how much.
Participating in this trial may also be an opportunity for your business to seek out and test areas of efficiency within your facility and operations, while getting rewarded for doing so.
Why is BC Hydro offering this program?
As the temperature drops during the colder winter months, the demand for electricity increases. During these peak times of the day when energy usage is at its highest, our electrical system can be under strain. By participating in this trial, you can help us manage high demand at peak times by reducing your energy consumption during these periods.
How does the trial program work?
1. Sign up for the Peak Saver Trial by November 30
The trial program runs from December 1, 2020 and ends March 1, 2021
2. Receive an email alert
We'll notify you of an upcoming Peak Saver event 24 hours in advance. Each event will last four hours, typically 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays during cold weather. If you’re able to participate, this is the time during which you will reduce your electricity usage. If not, there’s nothing else you need to do and there will be no penalty.
3. Reduce your electricity usage
Take steps to reduce your electricity consumption during the Peak Saver event time listed in your event notification. We o only request that you reduce as much as it makes sense for your business. Some ways to reduce your consumption include:
- Turning off lights
- Turning down electric heat
- Reducing miscellaneous loads (computers, office equipment, appliances)
- Re-scheduling business activities (business hours, production)
- Shutting down compressors in ice making facilities, like hockey and curling rinks
4. Get rewarded
After each event, we'll send you an email asking you to confirm your participation and what you did to reduce your electricity usage. If you confirm your participation, we’ll provide a reward (bill rebate). There’s no penalty for not participating.
Sign up by November 30, 2020.
