Kathy Arrowsmith of Williams Lake didn't realize there was a grand prize when she began playing our online game during October's Power Smart Month promotion. She was happy enough when she became one of the 31 instant-win daily prize winners.
So it was a bit of a surprise when she got a phone call to tell her she had won a Samsung Home Bundle featuring an ENERGY STAR® dishwasher, fridge, 40-inch LED TV and home entertainment system. The grand prize was drawn from all the daily prize winners, including Kathy.
"It's still kind of hard to believe," she says. "I never win anything!"
She started playing the online game after spotting a promotion on Global TV. It sounded "easy and fun", Arrowsmith says. Now that she's won the big prize, friends and family are encouraging her to keep the lucky streak going.
"They keep telling me to buy a lotto ticket," she says.
When asked what's first on the agenda for the new appliances, she mentions that once it's installed, she'll likely host a big dinner and put the new dishwasher to good use.
New appliances added to energy-saving checklist
Now that she has a new ENERGY STAR fridge coming her way, Arrowsmith is able to cross one thing off her to-do list. She was already in the market for a new refrigerator, and had been looking at energy-saving models.
"All the rest of our appliances are already energy-efficient," she explains.
Energy-saving appliances are just one way that Arrowsmith and her family trim their BC Hydro bills. They're pretty good at washing in cold water and turning lights and electronics off.
But there's still more work to do, she admits.
"I use my dryer too much," she says. "I need to find a way to cut down on that."
And that's a good plan — clothes dryers are one of the most power-hungry appliances out there, after refrigerators. If your household does eight loads of laundry a week and you hung 50% of those loads to dry, you could save $45 a year.
Now that the rest of her appliances and electronics are ENERGY STAR, it's a good time to start thinking about that dryer.
