BC Hydro crews clean up in northern B.C. after windstorm

A late-season windstorm left 8,300 BC Hydro customers in Northern and Coastal B.C. without power Tuesday. The areas hardest hit were Burns Lake, Fort St. James, Prince Rupert and Terrace.

Strong wind gusts along the northern coast, clocking in higher than 100 kilometres per hour, and heavy rain in some areas, caused trees and branches to come into contact with power lines.

The storm caused extensive damage to BC Hydro's transmission and distribution system. Crews have been working around-the-clock to make the necessary repairs. Due to the severity of the storm and the restoration efforts involved, 11 additional crews were dispatched from the Lower Mainland and the Southern Interior to provide assistance. BC Hydro also used contract crews.

This morning, there are more than 1,000 customers without power. BC Hydro plans to have power restored for all customers before 6 p.m. today.
