Message from Chris O'Riley

Today’s severe windstorm has caused significant damage and we currently have 260,000 customers without power across the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island. This is one of the most damaging windstorms we have seen in years.
We recognize that any loss of power is difficult for our customers, particularly at this busy time of year. I want to assure you that BC Hydro is doing everything we can to safely restore power as soon as possible. We have more than 550 field staff from across the province working to restore power, and we’re bringing in additional resources from other areas of B.C. Crews will be working around-the-clock until all damage is repaired.  So far, power has been restored to more than 240,000 customers.
With today’s storm bringing winds of up to 100km/h in some areas, damage from these winds has been extensive. At this time more than 750 spans of wire, 270 poles, 400 cross-arms and 150 transformers have been damaged.
If you’re monitoring the status in your community, please know that it may take us longer than usual to restore power. The major damage to hundreds of our structures and power lines means that our crews will work through the night. In some areas, it may take us several days to safely restore your power.

If you come across any downed or damaged power lines in your community, please stay back at least 10 metres – about the length of a bus – and call 911 to report the exact location.
