New to Power Smart Express: LEDs for recessed and surface-mounted ceiling troffers

LEDs for recessed and surface-mounted ceiling troffers added to Power Smart Express

After customers asked for it, Power Smart delivers LED solution for ceilings

After months of rigorous testing, Power Smart is pleased to announce that as of April 15, 2015, LEDs for recessed and surface-mounted ceiling troffers were added to Power Smart Express' list of lighting technologies eligible for incentive.

A troffer is a rectangular light fixture that fits into a modular dropped ceiling grid, typically designed to house standard fluorescent lamps. But that has changed.

"If you're using T8 or T12 fluorescent lamps in your ceiling troffers, hard-wired LEDs are now an excellent alternative," says Power Smart's lighting guru Cristian Suvagau. "Not only do hard-wired LED alternatives to T8s and T12s offer energy savings, they also reduce maintenance costs because of an LED luminaire's long lifetime. When treated right, an LED luminaire can last 50,000 to 60,000 hours, compared to 20,000 hours for standard T12 and T8 replacement lamps."

According to Suvagau, switching ceiling troffers from T8 fluorescents to LEDs can result in energy savings of more than 40 per cent in a single application. The savings climb to roughly 50 per cent when a change is made from T12 fluorescents to LEDs. The only exception is T5 fluorescents: since they're not used in ceiling troffers, they can't be replaced with these LEDs.

The LEDs added to Power Smart Express' list of eligible lighting technologies include:

Existing technology Retrofit technology
2' 4 lamp T12 magnetic ballast LED (2x2) troffer luminaire or retrofit kit >2000 lm and <=40W
4' 2 lamp T12 magnetic ballast
4' 2 lamp T12 magnetic ballast LED (1x4) troffer luminaire or retrofit kit >2000 lm and <=40W
4' 3 lamp T8 electronic ballast LED (2x4) high output troffer luminaire or retrofit kit >3000 lm and <=70W
4' 3 lamp T12 magnetic ballast

Features, benefits and applications of LEDs in ceiling troffers

Suvagau estimates that close to two billion fluorescent lamps are in use at any given time in North America, and are typically found in office buildings, schools and classrooms, hospitals and banks.

"The adoption potential for LEDs in ceiling troffers is tremendous," he says. "T12 fluorescent lamps are also slowly being phased out, so now is the right time for customers to consider LEDs as an alternative."

Energy savings aside, another benefit of LEDs for ceiling troffers is the easy installation. There's no need to open up the ceiling or cut dry wall. A certified electrician should be able to install an LED into a ceiling troffer in a modular ceiling grid or surface-mounted fixture in less than 10 minutes.
