LED exit signs: a simple, inexpensive fix that's often overlooked

Not sure whether your exit signs are energy-saving LEDs? Look for a green running man in the display. That's a sure sign it's LED.

LED exit signs use just 1 to 3 watts of power, and they last a lot longer too

Positioned above doorways and in stairwells, exit signs are everywhere and are always illuminated for safety's sake. They're also one of the simplest and most inexpensive LED lighting upgrades you can do. Just ask Power Smart engineer Cristian Suvagau.

"It's true, replacing an old-fashioned incandescent exit sign with an LED sign can reduce the sign's energy use by as much as 90 per cent," says Suvagau. "Nowadays, LEDs are the standard for illuminating exit signs."

Traditionally, exit signs use two incandescent light bulbs that draw 30 to 50 watts of power. And while that may not seem like much compared to other lighting sources, the B.C. fire code states that exit signs must be "on" 24 hours a day and seven days a week, which means the signs consume electricity constantly. LED exit signs, on the other hand, use just 1 to 3 watts of power.

Incandescent exit signs burn out quickly too, which means you'll be buying new bulbs and climbing a ladder to replace the old ones in less than a year. By contrast, LED exit signs could last 100,000 hours, or the equivalent of more than 11 years. And don't forget, because LED exit signs last much longer, your replacement and maintenance costs will also go down.

Lean on Power Smart Express incentives to switch to LED exit signs

In addition to incentives available for bulbs and lamps, Power Smart Express incentives are available for all makes and models of LED exit signs. Once the incentive is applied, the cost for a standard LED exit sign is about $50 per unit (permit and labour costs not included).
