Team Power Smart members urged to help with shoreline cleanup
Members who help at four B.C. locations could win a prize pack
Twelve years after the first Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, there's still a whole lot of work to do across Canada, including British Columbia. Last year's shoreline cleanup produced over 120,000 discarded drink containers, over 191,000 cigarette butts and packages, and nearly 8,000 hooks and other fishing-related items.
This September, BC Hydro Team Power Smart and Vancouver Aquarium are offering Team Power Smart members an opportunity to volunteer for shoreline cleanup efforts across the province. At four locations — two in Victoria, one in Vancouver, and one in Kamloops — Team Power Smart members volunteering will be entered into a draw for a prize pack worth $50.
"It gives us the opportunity to remind Team Power Smart members about what we see as a fantastic opportunity to contribute and get involved with the community," said Arien Korteland, program manager for Team Power Smart. "We love our beaches and shorelines in B.C., and Team Power Smart members have always shown great interest in sustainability, starting with saving electricity."
Last year over 54,000 people registered for shoreline cleanups at over 1,800 shorelines across Canada. Through the efforts of community groups, schools and individual volunteers, over 10,000 trash bags were filled, and an over 3,800 bags of garbage were recycled.
