Use MyHydro to manage energy and profitability
Track the peaks and valleys of your electricity use online
This is the first in a three-part series about the benefits of MyHydro for BC Hydro's small business customers.
If you're a business owner, you're probably always looking for ways to save money.
With MyHydro's electricity-tracking tools, business owners in B.C. can now identify ways to reduce their business' energy consumption, and help save money on their BC Hydro bill. Best of all, MyHydro is simple and easy to use.
MyHydro has features that businesses love
Once you've logged into MyHydro, an energy-tracking graph for your business will display on your homepage. If you’ve just signed up for MyHydro, your billing information will be available after the next bill is sent, however consumption data is readily available. This graph has the power to change the way you work.
MyHydro's energy-tracking graph displays your business' daily energy consumption for the last seven days of the billing period. You can also quickly and easily adjust the time frame to see previous billing periods.
With this tool, you can monitor exactly how much electricity your business consumes during its normal hours of operation. You can also drill down, hour-by-hour, to see your business' peak consumption time(s) or when consumption is unusually or unnecessarily high. When you know your peak consumption days and times, it's much easier to develop an action plan.
Just as importantly, you can see how much electricity is consumed outside of your business' normal hours of operation — a cost that eats directly into profitability.
A practical example of MyHydro at work
Let's say your business' normal hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. One morning you log in to MyHydro to look at your monthly bill. You notice, because of a spike in the energy-tracking graph, that your consumption was unusually high between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. the night before.
Was something left on? The lights in the back office? A kitchen appliance? Or is that the night you stayed late to do some administrative work, keeping the lights on later than usual?
By spotting unusual consumption patterns, you can develop simple action plans to reduce energy use. For instance, you can create a closing checklist or closing procedure for staff, to ensure appliances are turned off. You can also see how lighting infrequently used spaces, like a corridor or office at 2 a.m., can waste a lot of money.
With quick and simple wins like this, it's easy to see why the energy-tracking graph is MyHydro's most popular feature for business customers.
