Scheduled outages due to pole replacement work
As BC Hydro works to replace aging infrastructure across the province, over 12,000 wooden power poles will be replaced annually. Wooden poles help provide electricity to homes and businesses across B.C.
Replacing these aging poles is important work that can require a power outage in order to ensure the safety of our crews and the public.
Pole replacements may result in an outage of up to eight hours, usually on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
If an outage is required, BC Hydro will try to provide you with as much notice as possible. Unfortunately, as the work schedule for these replacements depends on weather conditions, the number of customers affected, the work location and other factors, our crews and the contractors completing the work may not always be able to provide advance notification.

Why we need to replace wooden poles
There are about 900,000 wooden poles in BC Hydro’s system, and they have a lifespan of about 40 to 50 years.
Over time, the poles weaken and deteriorate and need to be replaced. New poles ensure long-term reliability for all our customers, and help maintain continued safety for the public and our crews.
