November is Ocean Wise Month at Vancouver Aquarium
Innovative conservation program aims to protect endangered ocean species
Many of us think of the award-winning Vancouver Aquarium as a place to experience the wonder of aquatic species. The popular penguin exhibit, beautiful tropical fish and cuddly sea otters are perennial favourites for many Lower Mainland families. But do you think of the Aquarium when you step out to enjoy a meal at a favourite restaurant?
This month, maybe you will.
November is Ocean Wise Month, celebrating the conservation program that Vancouver Aquarium launched to address overfishing, the single biggest threat facing our oceans today. Now across Canada, the program involves partner restaurants, markets, food services and suppliers. Ocean Wise ensures that their partners have the latest scientific information to help make ocean-friendly buying decisions.
For customers, partner restaurants proudly display the Ocean Wise symbol on menu items and display cases, helping to make it easy to see which are the most sustainable seafood options on offer.
Events, features highlight a month dedicated to conservation
More than 500 Ocean Wise partners are on board this month to celebrate all things sustainable seafood. From seafood and wine pairings to the popular annual Chowder Chowdown, there's a lot going on to raise awareness of this tasty program.
But it's not just sustainable seafood being highlighted at Vancouver Aquarium this month.
November also sees the return of the wildly popular Luminescence exhibit, celebrating aquatic light.
Join The Vancouver Aquarium this winter for Luminescence, a unique celebration of aquatic light, from November 28th until January 22. Discover how aquatic life creates and reflects light through new exhibits that dive deep below the ocean's surface and shows for the whole family. Enjoy the beauty of our diverse species of jellyfish aglow with special lighting as well as the Jelly Swarm, a light installation featuring almost a hundred origami jellies. Plus, don't miss holiday favourites like Scuba Claus, the electric eel powered tree and Ice Age: A Mammoth Christmas in its Goldcorp 4-D theatre. Visit www.vanaqua.org for more details and show schedules.
Watch the Vancouver Aquarium website for more details about Luminescence.
