Mustard Seed clients cut costs with Energy Saving Kits

Although British Columbians enjoy some of the lowest electricity rates in North America, energy bills can still be a burden for those on low incomes.

That's why BC Hydro has partnered with The Mustard Seed, a Greater Victoria non-profit organization that operates the largest food bank on Vancouver Island, to provide Energy Saving Kits to low-income customers.

"Our partnership with BC Hydro's Energy Saving Kit program is a much-needed link between social justice and environmental education and conservation," says Rudi Wallace, assistant food bank director at The Mustard Seed. "This initiative has raised awareness about environmental stewardship while providing practical ways for our clients to reduce their cost of living. We're proud to be a part of it." On July 19, BC Hydro was onsite at The Mustard Seed to distribute free Energy Saving Kits to clients with a BC Hydro account. The kit contains simple, easy-to-install energy saving products including:

  • Compact fluorescent light bulbs
  • Weather stripping
  • Fridge and freezer thermometers
  • A high-efficiency showerhead.

Each kit can save customers up to $100 in energy costs.

Partnerships with food banks have proven to be a great way for BC Hydro to connect with low-income customers and to help remove any barriers to participate in the program. Some clients face challeneges while signing up for an Energy Saving Kit on their own, like English as a second language, or visual impairments. To date, BC Hydro and FortisBC have distributed 52,000 Energy Saving Kits.

Do you qualify for a free energy saving kit?

If you're a BC Hydro or FortisBC customer who lives in a low-income household, you may be eligible to receive a free energy saving kit.

BC Hydro and FortisBC also offer their low-income customers the Energy Conservation Assistance Program which features a free in-home energy evaluation, the installation of energy-saving products and personalized energy advice.
