Fraser Health Authority: Providing top-notch medical care with less energy

The numbers are big
The Fraser Health Authority serves more than 1.6 million B.C. residents, from Burnaby to White Rock to Boston Bar. It has 26,000 staff, 2,500 doctors and 6,500 volunteers working to keep its 12 acute care hospitals and 7,760 residential long-term care beds operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
So you can bet its energy costs are big, too.
The challenges are complex
"Energy management can be complex for us," says Fraser Health Authority's Energy Manager, Rob Bradley, "because you can't just turn off a lot of our plant and equipment to save energy. You have to be creative instead."
Which is why Fraser Health signed up for BC Hydro's Power Smart Partner Program. In just a few years, Rob and Energy Coordinator Jeson Mak — with help from Fraser Health's Facilities Maintenance and Operation teams — have implemented more than 28 Power Smart Partner lighting, air-handling unit coil cleaning, variable frequency drive and digital control upgrade projects.
The results are terrific
The results: energy savings of nearly 7 gigawatt hours annually, or enough energy to power about 640 B.C. homes per year, and an estimated cost avoidance of at least $440,000 a year.
"Without the incentives from the Power Smart Partner Program, it would have been a struggle," says Rob, who also won BC Hydro's Energy Manager of the Year Award in 2010. "There's no way we could have afforded to do all of the projects we've done so far. But it's not just the funding. It's also support from our Key Account Manager and the engineers at BC Hydro, too. We discuss new opportunities all the time, and I have to say, it's a fantastic program."
About the Power Smart Partner program
The Power Smart Partner Program is dedicated to helping commercial, government and institutional organizations that spend more than $250,000 a year on electricity integrate long-term energy management into their day-to-day operations.
The program includes tools — such as an Energy Study and an Energy Management Assessment — to identify your organization's energy-saving opportunities, support for a full-time Energy Manager, and financial incentives for implementing energy-efficiency projects.
To become a Power Smart Partner, contact your BC Hydro Key Account Manager or call 604 522 4713.
