BC Hydro, FortisBC add energy savings to food bank mix

Food banks and Christmas bureaus around B.C. are getting a helping hand from BC Hydro this winter.

We've partnered with FortisBC to brighten up some holiday hampers: 3,000 hampers will include Bright Green eco-friendly dish soap, tagged with information about how recipients can receive a free Energy Saving Kit. The kits can help save up to $100 per year.

How you can help

Consider giving to a food bank or supporting a special Christmas bureau this holiday season.

B.C.'s food banks help thousands of British Columbians in need all year long. In the Lower Mainland alone, the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society distributes food to nearly 27,000 people each week.

Across the province, almost 100,000 people rely on food banks each year. And during the holidays, organizations like the Surrey Christmas Bureau support hundreds of low-income families, especially those with children under 16.

For many of us, the holiday season is a time for celebrating with families and friends — lots of great meals, parties, and perhaps some over-indulging in delicious food and drink. Giving to a food bank or supporting a Christmas bureau can help make the holidays special for others.

Support a food bank near you

Most of British Columbia's food banks receive no government funding and rely on public support and donations.

If you're not in a position to give financially this year, donating food to a food bank is a great way to give back. The Surrey Food Bank Society has a list of most-needed items. Or maybe you're interested in organizing a food drive among friends or colleagues. Check out resources from the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society on organizing a food and funds drive.
