Excellence Awards: Power Smart Leaders in abundance

Up to seven new companies could be recognized for energy-efficiency leadership

This fall, the Power Smart Excellence Awards will celebrate a new milestone for sustainability leadership in B.C. More companies than ever before are finalists in the Power Smart Leader award category.

"Being designated a 'Leader' is the highest level an organization can achieve," says award program manager Cathy Duncan. "These companies are the cream of the crop — the best in class in terms of demonstrating what can be done to work efficiently and conserve energy."

Power Smart Leaders are recognized for consistently meeting or exceeding their own rigorous targets for energy management, and instilling a culture of energy conservation and environmental sustainability within their organizations.

"Potentially, we could be recognizing up to seven new Leaders this year and up to 11 companies in the Leadership Excellence category (renewed Leaders). In 2010, we had only two new Leaders," says Duncan. "So this is the most organizations working at this level since the inception of the program."

Awards highlight excellence, inspire change

Now in its ninth year, the Power Smart Excellence Awards program places a spotlight on best practices related to energy management and conservation.

There are 10 award categories, including implementation of new technology, energy conservation commitment, and energy manager. Some categories target entire sectors, such as consumer product manufacturers, construction, and retail. Others, like the Leader category, focus on comprehensive success.

This year, there are more than 40 finalists. Companies are nominated for their significant energy efficiency and conservation accomplishments.

"Our goal is to promote the message that energy conservation is not only becoming a core business practice in B.C. — but our customers are excelling at it," says Duncan. "We're recognizing those who are helping shift our province towards a smart energy future. All of our finalists are the companies to learn from, emulate and watch."

Awards event 'excellent chance to learn'

The Power Smart Excellence Awards ceremony will take place at the Vancouver Convention Centre on October 18.

It's the first year that the Power Smart Forum and the Excellence Awards will both be held biennially, in alternate years. Early-bird registration fees are $75 per person, and registration opens August 24.

"We maximize the opportunity to recognize, learn and share at the awards," says Duncan.

"Finalists' accomplishments will be profiled, so people attending get an inside look into all these companies, and a chance to understand where energy management and best practices are headed in B.C. It's a great chance to inspire other businesses and provide ideas about how to move their own company's energy conservation efforts ahead a notch."
