With the summer over and Power Smart Month (October) looming, the Energy Fix contest is drawing closer.
This year's "energy makeover" candidate, the Fernwood Inn in Victoria, has now completed its retrofit – and you'll soon have a chance to learn what they did, and to enter to win great prizes.
The Fernwood Inn project – estimated to save about $4,900 a year in electricity costs – involved upgrades in a variety of areas, including:
- Addition of a demand ventilation control for the exhaust hood in the kitchen;
- Upgraded lighting;
- Addition of a makeup air system;
- Reinsulation of a walk-in cooler;
- Building envelope upgrades.
"Compared to last year's upgrade at Donald's Market, we have a few new technologies to show off," said Energy Fix coordinator Janis Tong.

Details of the improvements on the 100-year-old building were captured on video and will be released on October 3 in a series of four online videos.
"From October 3 to October 31, people can visit the Energy Fix and view the videos," says Tong. "Each one is followed by a question. You answer the question, and you get one entry into the prize draw."
Prizes include a grand prize of one $500 gift certificate for Home Depot plus one $500 gift certificate for London Drugs, and three runner-up prizes of $250 at Home Depot. You can enter up to four times – one for each of the online videos.
"We're hoping small and medium sized businesses watch the videos and get inspired," says Tong. "It's pretty simple to get started on energy efficiency; you don't have to do everything at once, and every little bit helps you save money on your electricity bill.
"And this project will show businesses – especially restaurants – that you can be energy efficient and still maintain the mood and ambience of your venue."
