Eco-savvy couple wins $5,000 in windows contest
There's apparently some good karma attached to the eco-consciousness of Powell River's Chris and Trina Moldenhauer.
As model members of Team Power Smart, they've won $5,000 towards the cost of window upgrades they did to their home in November. And true to form, the Moldenhauers are not done upgrading their home's efficiency — they plan to upgrade more windows in the coming months.
The couple reports that the windows installed by Modern Windows have increased the temperature and comfort in their home, particularly upstairs. They moved into the house, built in the early 1900s by the lumber giant MacMillan Bloedel, in August of 2008, then joined Team Power Smart in October.
Since then, they've been careful to use only the lights they need, change all their bulbs to CFLs, and buy an ENERGY STAR washer and dryer. They also removed a second old fridge through the BC Hydro Power Smart Fridge Buy-Back program, and even took advantage of recycling an old freezer during a special Power Smart offer to haul away the old appliance.
Next up for the Moldenhauers is a full energy assessment through the LiveSmart BC efficiency program.
The Moldenhauers also extend their conservation efforts to recycling. While living in Terrace, Tina was involved in the Kitimat Understanding The Environment (KUTE) program. The initiative ran out of funding but Trina intends to start a similar program in Powell River.
