Safety Around Meters

Help our meter readers read your meter safely and accurately by keeping the area around your electric and gas meters free of obstacles.

Clear bushes, debris and other obstacles that may be hazardous to the meter reader. Ensure the type of bush or shrub you are planting near or around your meters does not obstruct the view for reading.

Clean the dial glass on your meters. Sometimes dust and dirt accumulate on the dial glass and obstruct the view.

If you see a BC Hydro meter with cracked or broken glass, don't touch it, and warn others to stay away. Call 1 888 POWERON (1 888 769 3766) and it will be repaired or replaced.

Secure your dog(s) away from meter areas. Please call your local office to update our staff if you have acquired a new dog, or your dog is no longer on the property. The name and type of your pet is valuable information to ensure the safety of our meter reader.

Dogs on customer routes can be a safety concern for BC Hydro meter readers. Consequently, meter readers may record information about the presence of a dog(s) near meter reading area(s). This information will only be used for the purpose of ensuring safe working conditions.

Your BC Hydro meter reader carries a "dog stopper" umbrella. The umbrella is designed to open quickly if a dog tries to attack. The umbrella enables the meter reader to safely exit the property.

Tell us about meters located in dangerous areas. What might have been free and easy access when the meter was installed may now be a hazard. New construction at your home, such as a new patio or deck, may place the meter in an undesirable location. Please contact us with any questions about the safety of the area around your meters.

Clear access to your cabin. Accounts, such as summer cabins in some areas of the province, are difficult to read during the winter months. Access is not always clear and may result in an estimated bill. Please try to keep access clear.
