Project planning needs inspire program improvements

Additions to program requirements make successful applications easier

We understand the importance planning plays in a project's success. That's why we've made recent additions to our Commercial programs that help simplify project planning.

A clear project completion date helps keep projects on track

Anticipating project steps, such as product delivery dates and installation schedules, ensures customer and Alliance member expectations are aligned. All Commercial customers must now provide an expected completion date in their applications. This clarifies expectations of the project and aligns it to annual program budgets, which in turn allows BC Hydro to do some important planning.

Paying attention to project dates is vital to ensuring Business Energy Savings Incentive eligibility. Here's why:

  • Selecting an expected completion date in the application will display a project-specific date range in which declaration can occur.
  • Declaring a project complete before the earliest date in the range, or after the latest date, will cancel the incentive agreement. No incentive will be given to your customer.
  • Extensions aren't allowed beyond March 31, as this is BC Hydro's annual fiscal cut-off. Projects that haven't completed and confirmed installation by March 31 will be cancelled, resulting in the project not being eligible for incentives.

Vendor financing addresses customer payment barriers and needs

It's often the case that a customer is very interested in the business improvements a retrofit offers, but can't commit capital to the project due to competing priorities.

"Alliance members will find that vendor financing is a powerful sales tool to help them close more deals," says Tim Mosley, a senior program manager with BC Hydro. "To help, we've developed a financing estimate tool that details information such as the monthly project savings, monthly finance costs, estimated pay-back periods and projected cash flows for a project."

The financing tool, which is now part of both the Business Energy Savings Incentive and Self-serve Incentive Program applications, also provides a way for users to connect with a financing provider to help on a specific project.

Proposal tool makes pre-planning a breeze

As you well know, project planning happens well before an incentive application has been submitted to BC Hydro. Site walk-throughs, needs assessments and proposals are crucial to project planning and as such, we've added a proposal tool to the Business Energy Savings Incentive program.

"Many customers were asking members to include an estimated incentive amount in their proposals," says Tanya Perewernycky, a product delivery specialist with BC Hydro. "This tool allows them to offer this information quickly and clearly."

Creating a proposal is a simple and effective way to provide customers with a list of configurations, product counts, project cost, and estimated incentive, all at once. Your customer can review the proposal by signing into the incentive portal, and can even transfer it into an application if they choose to move forward.
