Pruning near power lines

Pruning near power lines

Please note: Heavy snow and freezing rain are causing tree branches to move on or near our power lines. Be safe. Never prune if you, any part of your tree or your tools are within three metres of a power line. If any part of the tree or hedge is within three metres of a power line, call 1 800 BCHYDRO (1 800 224 9376). And if you see a downed power line, it's dangerous. Stay back and dial 911.

Pruning near power lines

Trees and other plants growing near power lines and ground-level transformers must be maintained so they don’t interfere with the electrical system. Otherwise, outages and safety hazards occur.

BC Hydro works with Certified Utility Arborists to prune trees within 3 metres of distribution or neighbourhood power lines. If a tree cannot be made safe by pruning, we’ll contact you.

Not sure about the difference between distribution and tansmission lines? See this helpful visual guide to power lines.

How we maintain trees near power lines

We hire Certified Utility Arborists (CUAs) who are qualified to work close to energized power lines and are trained in proper pruning techniques.

We routinely prune trees that might grow into power lines. This work is performed on a regular cycle and we use pruning practices that maintain the health of the tree while ensuring the security of the power line.

Pruning trees on your property

As a property owner, you're responsible for keeping the service wires on your property clear of vegetation. But if any part of the tree or hedge is within three metres of a power line, give us a call 1 800 BCHYDRO (1 800 224 9376).

Branches rubbing on service wires wear through the weather coating and may cause home electrical appliance damage.

You can perform your own pruning as long as you keep yourself, your equipment and all parts of the tree at least three metres away from the power line. If you can't or are unsure, contact a professional CUA to prune your trees.
