Winter Ungulate Diet Analysis

Objective

To document the winter diets of Stone's sheep, Rocky Mountain elk, and mule deer from different locations within the Williston Reservoir watershed for the purpose of directing future forage enhancements.

Study area

Various sites from the north side of the Peace Arm (for sheep, elk and deer) and the lower Ospika River drainage (for elk and deer).

Methods

Collection sites were selected based on known ungulate presence and helicopter accessibility to the site. Winter fecal pellet samples were collected from the snow surface, with each sample consisting of a composite of pellets from 5-10 pellet groups. One sample was collected per site for each time period (month). Diets were determined using fecal fragment analysis. The composition of each sample was determined for forage classes and select taxa; no correction factors were used for potential differences in plant digestibility.

Study period

December 1990 to March 1992
