Canada Geese Moulting Surveys

Objective

To identify sites along the foreshore of the Williston Reservoir that are used by moulting and brood-rearing Canada geese in order to direct future enhancement and conservation activities.

Study area

Williston Reservoir watershed, but narrowed to the Crooked/Pack river system and other select locations within the Parsnip River drainage.

Methods

Areas in the Williston Reservoir watershed that potentially had ice-free sites during the winter were solicited from local residents, aircraft pilots, and personnel from resource agencies familiar with the watershed. Based on the area's likelihood to have ice-free sites throughout the winter and their potential to be used by wildlife, a late-winter helicopter survey was conducted to investigate the identified areas. The number of ice-free sites were enumerated and their characteristics (e.g., size, depth) were recorded. All wildlife observed we counted and, where possible, classified to age and sex.
