Ungulate Inventories

Objective

To determine the abundance, composition, and distribution of ungulates wintering in select high-elevation and lower elevation areas within and adjacent to the Williston Reservoir watershed, and to identify potential enhancement sites. High-elevation inventories were focused on caribou, mountain goats, and Stone's sheep. Lower elevation inventories were focused on moose, Rocky Mountain elk, and caribou.

Study area

High-elevation (alpine and appropriate sub-alpine sites) and lower elevation (primarily open or regenerating sites) areas within the Williston Reservoir watershed.

Methods

Areas were pre-selected for coverage based on logistical factors and the likelihood of ungulates being present, but specific flight lines were determined while the survey was in progress. Low-level aerial surveys (total count and stratified block) were conducted using a Bell 206 helicopter, with a survey crew consisting of a navigator/observer and 2 additional observers. All animals observed were counted and classified to age and sex. Other wildlife were enumerated and classified where possible.

Study period

Winter 1989 to 1996
