Snow Depth Surveys

Objective

To confirm, or assist in determining, an area's ungulate winter-range capability.

Study area Numerous sites throughout the Williston Reservoir watershed. Sites were primarily at low elevations (<900 m asl).
Methods

Replicate sites (n > 100 per survey) were visited once per year by helicopter or vehicle. Snow depth measurements were manually taken using a rigid metre-stick. Sites included small forest openings, wetland/meadow areas, recently logged areas, and sites adjacent to watercourses and plowed logging roads.

Study period Winter 1990 and 1994
