Rocky Marsh Wetlands Enhancement Program

Objective

To maintain, conserve, and enhance the Rocky Marsh wetland for the numerous wildlife species that rely on or us this unique habitat. This was a cooperative project between PWFWCP, Ducks Unlimited, and several community groups from Mackenzie.

Study area

Rocky Marsh wetland (25 ha), 10 km south of Mackenzie, BC.

Methods

An earthen dam (96 m long) with a variable-crest drop inlet was constructed as a permanent water-control structure. Two floating islands were established for resting and nesting Canada geese and other waterfowl. Three nesting tunnels were erected for mallards. Six nest boxes were erected for cavity-nesting waterfowl such as buffleheads and goldeneyes. Nature trails and an observation deck were built adjacent to the wetland. A project sign was placed in the parking lot to provide a map of the site and identify project activities and participating organizations. As well, some small interpretative signs were erected along the nature trail and at the dam site.
