Peace Arm Elk

Objective

To determine the seasonal habitat use and movements, to assess the area's potential for habitat enhancement and protection activities, and to estimate the current population size of elk that are present on the north side of the Peace Arm. These elk, in a large part, are the result of transplants that occurred between 1985 and 1987.

Study area

North side of Peace Arm, Williston Reservoir

Methods

Five cow elk were fitted with VHF radio-collars in March 1991. Monthly fixed-wing radio-telemetry flights were conducted from March 1991 through May 1994. Prescribed burns were used to enhance pockets of winter range along the north side of the Peace Arm (see Prescribed Burning). A stratified random block survey was conducted by Bell 206 helicopter in February 2000 to determine the herd's population status.

Study period

March 1991 - February 2000

Project status

Completed
