| Objective |
Phase 1: To determine the seasonal habitat use, seasonal movements, population dynamics and general ecology of woodland caribou in two herds (Chase and Wolverine) on the west side of the Williston Reservoir. Phase 2: To determine the seasonal habitat use, movements, and ecology of caribou in the Wolverine Herd, with an emphasis on caribou use of forested habitats, and to protect caribou and caribou habitat through input to the development of a management strategy to address forest harvesting and caribou habitat, and input to the local candidate Protected Area boundaries, and local LRMP process. |
| Methods |
Phase 1: 30 caribou from the Chase and Wolverine herds were captured and fitted with VHF radio-collars and monitored approximately monthly by fixed-wing aircraft. A population survey was conducted by Bell 206 helicopter in March 1993. Phase 2: Additional caribou were captured in the Wolverine Herd increasing the sample size to 27 radio-collared caribou. Caribou were monitored monthly by fixed-wing aircraft, with flight frequency increased during spring, calving, and winter periods. A June calf count and winter population inventories were conducted by helicopter. |
