Neonatal Ungulate Selection

Objective

To obtain a better understanding of predator-prey (wolf-ungulate) dynamics, and to determine the neonatal (new born) ungulate selection by wolves in a multi-prey system (the north side of the Peace Arm).

Study area

North side of the Peace Arm, Williston Reservoir

Methods

Twelve wolves were captured and fitted with VHF radio-collars, and monitored by fixed-wing aircraft to determine seasonal movements and specifically den locations. Scats were collected from wolf dens to determine prey species taken during the ungulate neonatal period.

Study period March 2000 to March 2002
