Neilson Lake Wetland Enhancement Project

Objective

To maintain, conserve, and enhance the Neilson Lake wetland for the numerous wildlife species that rely on or us this unique habitat. This was a cooperative project between PWFWCP and Ducks Unlimited.

Study area

Neilson Lake wetland (46 ha). The site is situated between Hwy #97 and Summit Lake, 40 km north of Prince George, BC.

Methods

A variable-crest steel weir was constructed as a permanent water-control structure; water levels can be changed by up to 1.5 m. To increase the nesting and feeding habitat in the fen portion of the wetland, 440 m of level ditching (6-m wide x 2-m deep trench) was created using an excavator. Two floating islands were established for resting and nesting Canada geese and other waterfowl. Five nest boxes were erected for cavity-nesting waterfowl such as buffleheads and goldeneyes. In December 1995, the wetland and surrounding area (84 ha) was designated as an area of special concern under Section 12 of the Lands Act. An interpretative sign was erected at the site to provide information on the wetland and its wildlife; as well, a project-partners sign was erected.
