Moose Inventories

Objective

To determine the abundance, composition, and distribution of wintering moose in lowland areas within the Williston Reservoir watershed, and to identify potential enhancement sites.

Study area

Lowland areas of the Williston Reservoir watershed, primarily east and west of the Parsnip Reach (Williston Reservoir).

Methods

Survey areas were pre-selected for coverage based on logistical factors and the likelihood of moose being present, but specific flight lines were determined while the survey was in progress. Open and shrub areas were the primary focus as forested areas had low sightability. Low-level aerial surveys were conducted using a Bell 206 helicopter, with a survey crew consisting of a navigator/observer and 2 additional observers. All moose were counted and classified to age and sex. Other ungulate species were also enumerated and classified where possible.

Study period

February 1989 and 1999
