Ingenika River Elk Tranpslant

Objective

To supplement a small existing herd of elk in the Ingenika River drainage and establish a viable population (100-150 animals) in the area by March 2000.

Study area

Ingenika River, west side of Finlay Reach (Williston Reservoir)

Methods

Fifty Rocky Mountain elk were captured in corral traps at Groundbirch, east of Chetwynd, in Feb 1996. Elk were then transported by horse trailer to the north side of the Ingenika River . Ten female elk were fitted with VHF radio-collars and monitored once every season by fixed-wing aircraft. A total-count block survey was conducted by Bell 206 helicopter in March 2000 to estimate the abundance and composition of the Ingenika elk population; Radio-collared elk were used to correct for sightability.

Study period

Feb 1996 - March 2000

Project status

Completed
