Dunlevy Property Summary

Objective

To prepare biophysical habitat and ungulate capability maps, and a habitat enhancement program for the Dunlevy Property that was purchased by the Nature Trust of British Columbia (funding provided by the PWFWCP).

Study area

A 681-hectare parcel of land 19 km north west of the W.A.C. Bennett dam, north side of the Peace Arm, Williston Reservoir. The land, noted as important winter range for moose, Rocky Mountain elk and mule deer, consists of abandoned fields, shrublands, and conifer forest.

Methods

Vegetation, soil, and site data were recorded along 8 transects surveyed within the property. Capability ratings for moose, elk, mule deer, and white-tailed deer were determined by comparing observed habitat characteristics with ungulate capability ratings for a nearby mapping project (Lower Halfway area) and biologists familiar with the site. These data were then used to develop biophysical habitat and ungulate capability maps for the land, and to recommend appropriate habitat enhancement activities.
