UNBC Receives $100,000 Grant for Peace/Williston Aquatic Research Award

PRINCE GEORGE - The Peace/Williston Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program (PWFWCP) is providing a one-time grant of $100,000 to UNBC for the establishment of a Peace/Williston Aquatic Research Award. A formal agreement (PDF 50KB) to provide the grant and establish the aquatic research award was signed today, at UNBC, between Dr. Jago, President of UNBC and John Metcalfe – a member of the PWF&WCP steering committee.

UNBC will manage the one-time grant in perpetuity to provide a yearly $5,000.00 Peace/Williston Aquatic Research Award for a graduate student. By establishing this award in partnership with UNBC, the Peace/Williston Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program strives to advance research on aquatic issues within the Program’s mandate area.

“We are extremely pleased to be receiving this one-time grant,” said UNBC President Dr. Jago. “It initiates the building of a long term partnership with the PWF&WCP while providing the University with funding stability for graduate aquatic research work.”

“The PWF&WCP is excited about the opportunities that this grant will provide,” commented John Metcalfe, a member of the PWF&WCP steering committee. “The grant increases the PWF&WCP’s scientific and technical capacity by promoting more detailed research than would normally be possible. In addition, it helps to create a talent pool that the program can draw on for future work.”

The Peace/Williston Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program is a joint initiative of BC Hydro and the Ministry of Water Land and Air Protection. The program was established to enhance and protect fish and wildlife resources affected by the creation of the Williston and Dinosaur reservoirs in north central BC. The fish program’s mission is to provide naturally diverse and abundant fish populations in a healthy ecosystem.
