Senator

Richard NeufeldFirst elected to represent the riding of Peace River North in 1991, Neufeld was re-elected three times before resigning his as MLA and B.C. Minister of Energy Mines and Petroleum Resources after being named to the Senate in December, 2008.

After being named to the Senate by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Neufeld told bclocalnews.com that he will join other B.C. senators in advocating for British Columbia.

"I have a northern perspective of British Columbia that I hold near and dear to my heart, and they'll hear about it," he said.

Like the B.C. premier, Neufeld first entered the political arena at the municipal level, in this case as a councillor in Fort Nelson, rising to the major's office for a five-year term before making the transition to the provincial legislative assembly in 1991. With a career background in the oil and gas industry, he was the perfect candidate to become Minister of Energy and Mines.

When not in Victoria, Neufeld makes his home with his wife Montana in Fort St. John. They have four grown children.
