Born into a successful doctor's family in Vancouver in 1948, Gordon Campbell came to appreciate frugality and responsible consumerism as the eldest son of four kids being raised by a widowed single mom on a school secretary's salary. Having earned an MBA from Simon Fraser University, he embarked on a career in real estate development before committing to a life in public service. His success in this endeavour includes stints as a Vancouver councillor, the city's multi-term mayor, and a provincial MLA and Liberal party leader. He has been premier of British Columbia since 2001. He and his wife Nancy, a school vice-principal, are the parents of two grown sons.
