Weather data issues can delay delivery of reward cheques

If you're a Team Power Smart member who has delivered on a 10% electricity use reduction over 12 months but has yet to see your $75 reward cheque, you can blame the weather. Or at least, weather data.

BC Hydro adjusts electricity consumption data for yearly temperature fluctuations. This makes the year-to-year comparison more accurate, as customers won't be penalized if an increase in consumption is the result of a particularly cold year.

Each year, the finalization of the $75 reward for hitting the 10% reduction target associated with Team Power Smart hinges on two data sources. Once a challenge is complete after 12 months, BC Hydro uses both consumption data and weather data to determine whether the 10% target has been met.

And that's where, recently, the $75 reward program has experienced some delays in getting a final calculation and – if the 10% challenge is met – delivering reward cheques.

Consumption data currently comes in once every two months from our meter readers. And weather data, provided by Environment Canada and collected from hundreds of weather stations, is sometimes missing.

Until we fix a few technical issues and ensure more prompt collection of weather data, there will continue to be a delay – for some customers – in calculating final results on finished Team Power Smart challenges.

We apologize for any inconvenience. If you've successfully completed your challenge and hit that 10% or more reduction target, you will eventually receive your $75 cheque.

Also, once a challenge is complete, don't forget to start another 12-month challenge. You can learn more about how to do it by reading this recent blog post.
