Power Quality Solutions found the cure to problematic interruptions
MDS Metro Laboratory Services performs over nine million lab tests each year for more than two million patients in B.C. Kevin Wheeler, manager of facilities, was therefore extremely concerned when the Burnaby lab began having power quality problems. Three of its blood analyzer instruments were connected to a power conditioner and backup generator, but the sensitive machines still weren't adequately protected against power disturbances. It only took three seconds to switch to the generator, but that was enough time for the blood analyzers to automatically shut off and interrupt workflow.
After monitoring the electrical system for three weeks, a BC Hydro power quality specialist analyzed the problem and found a better solution for MDS Metro's operational needs. He removed the power conditioner and installed an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) system for each blood analyzer. The machines are now isolated from disturbances in the electrical system and the continuous power provided by the UPS systems means the analyzers continue to run until the backup generator starts.
"The new system has worked so well", says Kevin, "we've bought additional UPS units for our Victoria lab."
