Arthur T. McDonald, Director of Facilities & Transportation

When Art McDonald came to School District 73 (Kamloops-Thompson) as Director of Facilities and Transportation, he saw a huge opportunity to upgrade the schools' lighting systems with energy-efficient technologies.

He instituted studies to identify opportunities for lighting improvements—and then gained support of the School Board to implement upgrades.

Initiatives

  • Completed lighting retrofits at six schools and two District buildings, with four more in progress and eight more planned for 2006. The school district has reduced its electricity consumption by 21%.
  • Carried out lighting studies at nine schools.
  • Initiated a lighting pilot with BC Hydro in elementary schools to determine the potential savings.
  • Secondary students participated in the Power Smart Students Program.
  • All custodial staff received energy-efficiency training.
  • The school district revised its purchasing policies to support standardization with energy-efficient products.

Annual Energy Savings: 3.1 GWh
Annual Cost Savings: $155,000
