Pacific Palisades Hotel

The story

"Thanks to the Power Smart lighting retrofit, we'll realize impressive energy savings along with brighter, better quality lighting throughout the hotel."

Linda Chin, Hotel Manager, Pacific Palisades Hotel

The situation

Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants operates 40 boutique hotels with restaurants in Canada and the United States. The company takes pride in its social responsibility and has set the goal to operate as a profitable hotel business committed to sustainable environmental initiatives.

Kimpton's Pacific Palisades Hotel, located on Robson Street in Vancouver, has long been an environmental leader, with active recycling and linen/towel reuse programs and an Eco-committee that seeks ways to be more sustainable. Even so, hotel staff wanted to do more. Their new Chief Engineer, Louis Huynh had experience in implementing Power Smart projects in his previous hotel. Louis learned about BC Hydro's Power Smart Product Incentive Program, which offers incentives on the installation of energy-efficient technologies, and saw an opportunity to upgrade the hotel's lighting.

An energy assessment was conducted at the hotel and revealed that installing updated lighting technology could return significant energy savings, greatly improve lighting quality for hotel occupants and add value to the real estate asset.

The Pacific Palisades Hotel is the first Kimpton Property to install the energy-efficient lighting and have found that the new lighting works aesthetically as well as saves energy.

The solution

Pacific Palisades Hotel implemented an extensive lighting retrofit that involved:

  • Replacing 4,284 incandescent lamps with compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) in guest rooms.
  • Replacing 95 incandescent lamps with CFLs in common hallways.
  • Upgrading parkade lighting with 184 T8 fluorescent lamps with instant-start ballasts.
  • Converting 142 incandescent exit signs to light-emitting diode (LED) lighting.

The benefits

Electricity savings

The lighting retrofit is saving more than 521,000 kilowatt hours of electricity each year, worth over $26,000 in annual energy savings. Plus, Pacific Palisades received over $12,000 in financial incentives for the upgrades through the Product Incentive Program. Because energy-efficient technologies are longer-lasting, the hotel will also save nearly $10,000 on maintenance costs each year, and will realize air conditioning savings because lower-wattage CFL lamps produce less heat.

Reduced environmental impacts

Lower energy consumption results in reduced greenhouse gas emissions and enhanced environmental protection.

Improved lighting quality

Kimpton's aesthetic concerns proved to be unfounded; not only does the energy-efficient lighting maintain the style of the hotel, but it is providing brighter, better quality lighting in the parkade and back-of-house areas.
